Moving your baby from the bassinet to the cot is one of those milestones that feels big — because it is! Whether you’re dreading the change or feeling excited about reclaiming a bit of space in your room, the transition can be a smooth one with the right timing, setup, and sleep support.

Let’s talk about when, why, and how to make the move — and how to keep sleep on track through the change.

When Should You Move from the Bassinet to the Cot?

Most babies make this move between 4 and 6 months, but every baby is different.

   Signs it’s time to transition:

  • Your baby is rolling, scooting, or starting to push up on hands and knees

  • They’ve outgrown the weight or length limit of the bassinet (check your product’s guidelines)

  • They’re waking more often due to limited space

Safety first: If your baby is rolling or pulling up, it’s time to move — no matter their age. Bassinets are not designed for mobile babies.

Preparing for a smooth transition from bassinet to cot

  • If possible, let your baby play or do short supervised awake times in the cot during the day before sleeping in it.

  • Keep the same white noise and comfort routines they had in the bassinet.

  • Use the cot sheets in the bassinet for a few days so that they have a familiar smell. This is very comforting for babies.
  • Begin with daytime naps in the cot to introduce the new space while everyone’s well-rested, then move onto night sleep once you feel they’ve adjusted.

  • Familiar steps before bed (e.g., bath, feed, book, cuddle) act as emotional anchors during change.

  • If your bassinet was beside your bed, position the cot in the same spot to maintain familiarity (If they’re not moving to their own room yet).

What are the Cot Safety Guidelines

The move from bassinet to cot is a big step, and we worry as parents how their babywill adjust. With a bit of preparation, a dose of patience, and a whole lot of consistency, most babies adjust quickly.

If you’re feeling unsure or have hit a sleep regression (insert 4 month sleep regression link) around the same time, don’t worry — you’re not alone.  https://joannabothmasleepconsultant.com/the-4-month-sleep-regression/
